Paediatric Cardiology

Paediatric cardiology is the specialty that focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and managing heart issues affecting babies, including unborn babies, children, teenagers, and adolescents. Frequently seen cases by paediatric cardiologists include abnormal heart rhythms, heart disease or failure, heart murmurs, chest pain, hole in the heart, etc.

A paediatric cardiologist specializes in caring for children with conditions and diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Paediatric cardiologists diagnose and treat many heart diseases and problems from the foetal period through adulthood, including diseases present at birth (congenital heart disease), variations in heartbeat rhythm (arrhythmias), and disturbances of circulatory function. Along with the expertise in heart disease, paediatric cardiologists also carry out advanced examinations in general paediatrics, in order to provide all-round patient care.

The initial assessment performed by the paediatric cardiologist might start with a physical examination using a stethoscope, after which more detailed investigations may be suggested such as Paediatric ECHO.

Paediatric cardiology has greatly evolved in the past few years and has helped thousands of children to lead normal lives today.
