Intrauterine growth restriction, or IUGR, is when a baby in the womb (a fetus) does not grow as expected. The baby is not as big as would be expected for the stage of the mother’s pregnancy.

Many different things can lead to IUGR. An unborn baby may not get enough oxygen and nutrition from the placenta during pregnancy because of:

  • High altitudes
  • Multiple pregnancy, such as twins or triplets
  • Placenta problems

Risk Factors of IUGR babies include:
1. Maternal
2. Fetal
3. Placental

How to identify risk factors-
1. Proper & detailed history taking.
2. Proper & regular antenatal checkup.
