Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anaesthesiology at IHR Guwahati is responsible for ensuring that patients undergoing surgery or medical procedures experience a safe, pain-free, and comfortable experience before, during, and after their procedures.  We work closely with various surgical and medical departments, offering services for general, laparoscopic, obstetric, pediatric, and emergency surgeries, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that require sedation or pain control.

Our department is staffed with qualified and experienced anaesthesiologists trained in advanced techniques and supported by modern technology to deliver high standards of patient care.

Services Offered

Pre-Anaesthesia Check-up (PAC)

This evaluation helps the anaesthesiologist select the safest and most effective type of anaesthesia for each individual.

Before undergoing any surgery, patients are required to have a pre-anaesthesia check-up. This involves:

Types of Anaesthesia Administered

We offer all clinically accepted modalities of anaesthesia:

Each method is chosen based on the patient’s health condition, type of surgery, and patient preference.

Labour Analgesia (Painless Delivery)

For women undergoing childbirth, we offer epidural anaesthesia, a form of regional pain relief during labor. It is administered through a small catheter placed in the lower back, which allows pain control during active labor.

Benefits may include:

This service is optional and provided only after consultation with the anaesthesiologist and obstetrician.

Anaesthesia for Complex and Long Surgeries

Our anaesthesia team is trained to manage patients undergoing complex, long-duration procedures. Continuous patient monitoring is done using advanced anaesthesia workstations and monitoring systems to ensure:

All procedures adhere strictly to national and international anaesthesia safety protocols.

Post-operative Care

Post-surgery, patients are continuously monitored in the recovery area depending on the surgery type and health condition.

Pain relief and post-anaesthesia care plans are customized to ensure smooth recovery.

Why Pre-Surgical Consultation with an Anaesthesiologist is Important ?

Patients are encouraged to be open about any chronic illnesses, past surgical experiences, allergies, and ongoing medications during the consultation.

A pre-surgical consultation helps:

Reduce anxiety by answering patient queries

Improve patient safety by identifying risk factors

Plan post-operative recovery more efficiently
